Some do. Windows has a feature called 'Smart Multi-Homed Name Resolution' that can cause DNS queries to bypass the VPN tunnel. Does a VPN affect gaming on Windows?

A VPN will add some latency — typically 10–30ms on nearby servers. For competitive gaming, connect to a VPN server in the same region as the game server to minimise this.
