Do VPNs cause DNS leaks on Windows?›
Some do. Windows has a feature called 'Smart Multi-Homed Name Resolution' that can cause DNS queries to bypass the VPN tunnel. The best Windows VPNs override Windows DNS settings entirely or use their own DNS resolver. We test for DNS leaks on Windows 10 and 11 using ipleak.net and dnsleaktest.com. NordVPN, Mullvad, and ProtonVPN passed all Windows DNS leak tests.
Can I use a VPN with Windows 11?›
Yes. All major VPNs support Windows 11. Windows 11 also has built-in VPN support for IKEv2, L2TP, SSTP, and PPTP in Settings > Network & Internet > VPN. For consumer use, the provider's app is more reliable than manual configuration.
Does a VPN affect gaming on Windows?›
A VPN will add some latency — typically 10–30ms on nearby servers. For competitive gaming, connect to a VPN server in the same region as the game server to minimise this. NordVPN and ExpressVPN showed the smallest latency increase in our gaming tests. VPNs can reduce DDoS exposure in online games but won't improve performance if your connection is already low-latency.
